A leading figure in the renaissance of Haida art and culture is being recognized with a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. Robert Davidson is one of eight recipients this year of Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in visual and media arts.
Davidson is known around the world for his totem poles, masks, prints, paintings and jewelry.
The Canada Council's announcement of his award notes Davidson has focussed throughout his 40-year career on the strong formlines of Haida design and is now expanding traditional forms to a new level of abstraction.
The Canada Council funds and administers the Governor General's prizes which are valued at $25-thousand.
