A lesson learned from missing capsule incident
IT WAS SEALED AND STORED SAFELY OR SO IT WAS THOUGHT, BACK IN 1971 AND WAS SUPPOSED TO BE REVEALED NEXT WEEK DURING PRINCE RUPERT'S 100TH BIRTHDAY. BUT IT TURNS OUT THE TIME CAPSULE THAT WAS BURIED ON THE CITY'S WEST SIDE MORE THAN THREE DECADES AGO, WON'T BE FEATURED DURING THE CITY'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. WHEN IT WAS TIME TO DIG UP THE CAPSULE EARLIER THIS YEAR, CITY WORKERS COULDN'T LOCATE IT. IT SEEMS THE CAPSULE HAS DISAPPEARED. SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT WAS EVEN USED TO FIND IT BUT THE SEARCH PROVED FUTILE. AS A RESULT THE CITY WILL PREPARE ANOTHER CAPSULE NEXT WEEK TO BE OPENED IN ANOTHER 100 YEARS DURING PRINCE RUPERT'S 200TH BIRTHDAY.
"We are indeed launching a brand new capsule. We are not going to bury it. The work that's being done by a 2010 task force is looking at having the time capsule actually be on public display behind glass for the next 100 years at the Museum of Northern BC which will be the curator for it. It will be in a public location ,it will be on display we will always know where it will be located and we won't have this problem in a hundred years" said Michael Curnes, Director of Recreation and Community Services.
IT'S BELIEVED THE 1971 CAPSULE WHICH WAS BURIED BY THE JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, COULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE LANDFILL WHEN THE MAN-MADE HILL IT WAS BURIED ON WAS EXCAVATED IN PREPARATION FOR CONSTRUCTION THAT NEVER ENDED UP TAKING PLACE.
