Salmon Panel Reports

An independent scientific panel is making a series of recommendations to save Skeena wild salmon.

The four scientists supported by the Pacific Salmon Foundation is calling for a new collaborative management arrangements for the Skeena that would include government agencies, user and interest groups, and the general public.

It's also calling for more research and data collection on salmon and steelhead stocks and catches, and reduction in Alaska's interception of Skeena salmon, harvest reductions and the use of more selective fishing gear.

The panel's review was sanctioned by the Department of Fisheries and B-C's Environment Ministry and its report was submitted to them yesterday.

The Skeena Wild Conservation Trust says the report sets out a bold agenda for changing the way wild salmon are managed.

Executive Director Greg Knox says they'll be working closely with all sectors to ensure implementation minimizes impacts on current users. He says they're also confident that new opportunities will be created in the process.
